Whilst travelling through Morocco, we heard about Argan oil, its qualities, its rarity and above all, about its endemic nature to this area of the world.

 

Back in France, curious, we wanted to know more about this product :

- its physicochemical characteristics

- its nutritious qualities

- its cosmetic characteristics

- the manufacturing methods

Argan oil is handmade with a low yield of 3% ( 1 litres of oil made from 30 kilos of argania kernels which mean100 kgs of fruits gathered). As a result we found the most difficult aspect of this project was to find a reliable and determined supplier. Fortunately, we have finally found such a supplier who can guarantee us at least, 200 litres of Argan oil per week providing that we invest in machines (Oil press and filter). We have invested in her machines and also in the development of suitable premises. Moreover, we financed the ECOCERT certification of our partner. Since the summer 2005, we have an exclusive contract on all it production, which guarantees and optimizes the regularity of our supply.

This first approach gave us the opportunity to discover and to offer a range of natural care products from the great Berber tradition.

Our objective

 

"If nothing is done, in 50 years there will be no more argan tree in Morocco.

Moroccan farmers pull trees up to get fields back and make vegetables grow to the detriment of argan trees, of their traditions, and of the ‘Berbers' Gold’ !’

 

 

 

 

 

A FAIR TRADE

 

Presently, the World Trade Organisation is impeding the development of many small producers in developing countries due to overcomplicated and outdated international regulations which impede growth. Without going into ideology, it must be said that new focus should be placed upon producers in small markets, particularly in the developing world, because they are often operating in precarious and limited local markets.

  

 

The notion of Fair Trade is partly an answer to this. The most important aspect of this is to increase the openings for the disadvantaged producers inside the limits of a better regulated trade.

  

 

 

Our project is completely oriented towards this purpose.

 

 

Our commitment with an Argan oil producer from the area of Agadir has given us the opportunity to put into practice those notions of sustained development and fair trade. We have provided our producer with a working plant and together we have developeda distribution network which helps her sell her production at a higher price than the local prices.

The Rhassoul

 

  

Rhassoul (or Ghassoul) is natural clay. Rich in minerals and trace elements it has been used since the Middle Ages by Eastern and Moroccan women for their hair. This clay is extracted from the mines in Middle Atlas in Morocco, the only region in the world where it can be found.

 

 

Rhassoul naturally smells like hazelnut. Flower fragrance (rose or geranium) is added for their smoothing effects. It is particularly recommended for thick hair, as it regulates sebum secretion. It can be used to treat dandruff and hair loss. It is used as conditioner for all types of hair.

 

A natural care: in opposition to other shampoos, rhassoul does not contain surfactants and cleans thanks to a physical process.

 

Instructions for use: mix rhassoul with warm water until you obtain a creamy texture. Wet your hair, apply it, gently rub and keep it for 5 minutes. Rinse carefully while brushing your hair. Rhassoul makes your hair thick and brilliant.

ARGAN OIL

 

 

Our argan oil is certified organic (Ecocert-sas-F32600). It is cold pressed as far as the cosmetic oil is concerned, and slightly roasted for the nutritional one. It comes from the argan tree, which can reach 10 meters in height. The branches are thorny, and the leaves are  from 2 to 3 cm long. The fruit is as big as a walnut (see picture below), and is made of pulp covering a very hard nut.

The argan kernel holds from 1 to 3 albuminous and oily almonds containing up to 55% of oil. The different parts of the argan tree can have different functions. The wood is used for heating and carpentry, the leaves and the pulp are used for feeding the animals. The oil is extracted from the almond for nutrition or cosmetic use.

 

 

 

The cosmetic argan oil

 

 

You can use it on the whole body for moisturizing the skin. It is also particularly suitable for its healing and regenerating properties. 

 

For healthy and brilliant hair: apply on the hair and the scalp during the night, and then use  a soft shampoo.
